Chapter two

Team Kakashi stood before the Hokage, grim looks on their faces. She sighed.

"The remains of the hidden Itomaki estate were found years too late. There may still be survivors, however. We are sending you and Maito Gai's team to search for them. Here's a file of family, friends, and employees that lived in the estate 15 years ago. It starts with the head on the household and his wife, then their heir." She slid a manilla folder across the desk and Kakashi picked it up.

"Will that be all?" He asked, catching the scroll she tossed him.

"Hai. It's a 'C' rank." She dismissed.

They filed out and made their way to Naruto's apartment. Once there, the boys sat on his couch and Sakura started tea. Kakashi began reading aloud.

"Head of Household: Itomaki Kain. Age; 57. Job; Retired Ninja. There's a picture of him back then and it lists a whole bunch of nonsensical information." Kakashi said. "It also has a picture of how he would look now."

Sakura set three cups of tea down on the end table. "Just read the name, age and job of each person." She instructed.

"Yeah! Don't read the whole thing!" Naruto agreed.

Kakashi nodded in compliance. "Itomaki Ayame. Age; 48. Job; none." He smirked. "She was a pretty woman."

"Kakashi!" Two annoyed voices shouted in sync, unrehearsed.

"Yeah, sorry." He muttered unhappily. "Itomaki Amaya. Age; 25. Job; unknown. Says she was ten back then. There's two pic-" His eyes landed on the picture of what shw would look like today. "Ito Amaya." He whispered.

"What?" Naruto asked.

"Kakashi-sempai, you look like you've seen a ghost." Sakura said worriedly. "What about Itomaki Amaya?"

"No. Not Itomaki, just Ito. You remember her, don't you?" He asked. "The pretty girl with the scar on her neck?"

"The girl you tried to swindle into comming with us?" She demanded pointedly. "Yes."

"Look!" He shoved the picture at her.

"She's..." She trailed off and her eyes widened. "Alive..." She smiled at Kakashi. "We know where to start."

-

"Dammit." Why did things like this always have to happen to her?

Amaya had been racing through the forest after hearing the rumor of an Akatsuki sighting when she stepped in the wrong place. The snare trap went off and now she was hanging from a tree by her ankle. To add insult to injury, there were cherries on the ground. It was an animal trap.

"Dammit."

She lifted her head and glared at what could only be described as a walking plant. "Dammit." She said again, just for good measure.

He quirked a brow. "You're not an animal." He commented.

"No shit, Sherlock! Figure that one out by yourself?!" She screamed.

He sniffed. "Yes."

She appeared to calm down for a moment. "Now that we have that down," She said dryly. "GET ME DOWN FROM HERE!!!"

He blinked. "She is very rude. Don't you agree, Dei-kun?"

"Uh-huh. Yeah." A soft voice said in her ear.

She yelped. "Dammit! Don't do that!" She scolded the grinning blond.

"She don't like that, yeah?" The blond smirked. "What's your name, girly?"

She glared at him. "Ito Amaya." She huffed.

"Well, well! She's the one after Itachi, yeah?"

She gaped at him. "H-how did you...?"

He shrugged. "My spies are good for somethin'." He reached out and lifted her head. "Pretty little thing, yeah."

She bared her teeth at him. "Touch and you die, bastard." She threatened.

He let go. "Fine. Itachi will be through here in a day or two. He can decide whether to kill you or not. Yeah." He turned. "Let's go, Zetsu."

"Of course, Dei-kun." They walked away, leaving Amaya hanging from a tree by her ankle.

"Dammit."

-

Ten year old Amaya awoke in a bed. A bandage was wrapped securely around her throat. She sat up and started crying, pure terror racking her body.

A woman rushed into the room and pulled Amaya into her arms. "Shhh. Tell me what happened, baby." She urged, rocking the little girl back and forth.

Amaya let out a sob. "Th-they killed her! They killed my mommy!" She whined pitifully.

"Oh baby. Who killed your moma?" She asked soothingly.

"Red eyes. Akatsuki." Amaya said between sobs.

"Red eyes? I know who Akatsuki are, but red eyes? Why'd they kill your moma? Do you know?"

"Uh-huh." Amaya replied, whipping her eyes with her sleeve. "They wanted mommy's pendant. This." She pulled the small blue stone from her sleeve and held it up for the woman to see. It was connected to a silver chain and the light passed through it, revealing a Celtic knot on one side.

"It's pretty." The woman said. "Why'd they want it?"

"I don't know." Amaya buried her head in the womans shirt and sobbed.

-

Amaya's eyes fluttered open and she looked around her, the dream still fresh in her mind. She was on the ground, finally. The man she'd met and tried to jack his book was reading said book by a fire near her. He looked at her as she sat up. "How are you feeling, Itomaki-san?" He asked.

She froze upon hearing her old last name. "What did you call me?" She demanded, shooting him a glare.

"That's your name, is it not?" He asked, lifting a brow.

"No." She denied. "My name is Ito Amaya. I've never heard of an Itomaki." Her glare intensified.

He broke out into a sweat. "O-oh. Gomen. Forgive me, Ito-san." He said. He sighed in relief when she looked away after a moment. "I was wondering. What were you doing, hanging from a tree?" He winced when that glare returned in full force. "You don't have to tell me!" He said quickly, then popped a cherry he'd brought from Konoha into his mouth. The glare intensified. "You want one?"

"No." She bit out.

He need a bucket to keep the ground from muddying up from his sweat. "Uh... um... okay... Why not?"

The glare got angrier still. He really should shut up. "Because. I don't." She growled.

"My name's Hatake Kakashi." He offered.

"Hn." She looked away, still angry with him. At least she wasn't glaring at him anymore. Her glares were scary.

"Kakashi-sempai! Tell Naruto to shut up! He won't quit talking about Hinata!" Sakura complained, walking into the clearing.

"But she's so pretty!" The boy exclaimed dreamily. "I think I'm in love." He sighed.

"Just don't tell Neji that." Kakashi said dryly. "He'd kill you."

Naruto shivered. "I know..."

"She woke up!" Sakura exclaimed, reaching for a cherry. She popped it in her mouth right after Amaya turned to her. She recieved a chilling glare. "What did I do?" She asked, breaking out in a sweat.

"I. Hate. Cherries." The woman replied.

"Why?" Three voices asked.

She flushed, then glared. They all shut their mouths with three audible 'click's. "Jerks."

"Uh... What's wrong with you?" Naruto demanded, closing his eyes and crossing his arms moodily.

"Cherries are the seed of Satan." She said, not answering him.

"Right." Kakashi said, suddenly hating cherries himself. "I didn't need to hear that..."

Amaya's stomach growled and she flushed. "Um, do you have anything to eat?" She asked. "Besides cherries?"

"Sure!" Sakura chirped. She got to making dinner.
